eye brows , leg hairs , pubic hairs , eye lashes, grow to a certain length ....and i have found that if one of these hairs is cut(like in half) it will grow back to the exact same length as before. how does a strand of hair know it has been cut and how does it grow back to the same length

The older you get the less true this becomes.

The hair on my head is getting thinner and thinner. Some day I may not be able to grow any at all.

I sometimes get rogue eyebrow hairs that can grow to be 1 1/2" long (search "Lloyd Bridges", you'll see what I mean). They look like spider legs, one day I hope to scare the neighborhood kids with them. It's like I have antennae sprouting from my forehead. Maybe if I grow my eyebrows long enough I can comb them back over my bald head.

I was alarmed one day to see hair growing from my ears, not just the inside either. I saw a 1" long hair coming from the top of my ear. It was surrounded by the lightest of peach fuzz. Like some bizarre Goliath amongst the pixies. I pulled him out but he was back 2 months later.

Your hair may be tame and neat now, but one day all that will change.

I don't have an answer to your question, but you are absolutely right! I trimmed my eyebrow to almost non existence once, it grew back, but only to its original length. Never really thought about it till you asked. Great question!

This is something I have pondered before and the answer I came up with is this: the hair that grows back to the same length is not the same hair that was cut. It's like when you comb your hair and there's always that little bit that sheds, it's not just the hair on your head that does that, it all does. So the hair that you cut falls out and a new one grows back in it's place. This happens one hair at a time so you don't notice it.
